Background and objective With the rapid development of social economy and the improvement of people's life conditions, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is becoming more and more familiar with people. It seriously impacts on the T2DM patients' healthy. Many clinical researches have found that the bad results T2DM patients may have don't really lie in the disease itself, but the acute and chronic complications it leads, such as the inner environment's disorder and the cardiovascular or microvascular diseases. Cardiovascular pathology is one of the main expressions of T2DM chronic complications. Many T2DM patients have dyslipidemia, too. And many medical evidence researches have proved if some efficient intervenes or treatments can be given to them at first, the happening of the T2DM patients' cardiovascular pathology may be markedly decreased. As an important segment in the serum lipid metabolism, the scavenger receptor class B type I (SR-BI) gene may play a significant role on dyslipidemia in T2DM patients. So we investigated the association of SR-BI gene Gly4Ser variant with the serum lipid of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Chinese. Methods The genotypes of exon 1 variant in SR-BI gene were determined by polymerase chain reaction -restriction fragment length polymorphisms (PCR-RELP) assay in 150 patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus and 120 individuals with normal glucose tolerance(NGT). Fasting plasma glucose(FBG) triglycerides(TG) total cholesterol(TC) high-density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) low-density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) apolipoprotein A-I (apoA-I) and apolipoprotein B(apoB) were detected by automatic biochemistry analyzer.Result (1) There are three kinds of genotypes to appear, including GG (wide-type), GA (heterozygous mutation) and AA (homozygous mutation) in Han people when the target gene is cut by the restriction endonuclease Alu I. The allele frequency and genotypes of type 2 diabetes mellitus group weren't significantly different from that of NGT (P>0.05). (2) FBG TG, TC apoA-I and apoB weren'tsignificantly influenced by SR-BI Gly4Ser variant(P>0.05). (3) Compared with Gly/Gly genotype, subjects with Ser genotype had significantly different lower LDL-C concentration in both groups (P < 0.05). (4) The diabetics subjects with allele Ser had significantly lower HDL-C concentration in type 2 diabetes mellitus group(P < 0.05).Conclusion SR-BI gene exon 1 Gly4Ser variant wasn't the main reason causing T2DM, but it could promote the development of dyslipidemia and especially in T2DM.
