Objective: To find prevalence of anemia , and assess its correlation with NYHA-class and the effect of different hemoglobin(Hb) level on the hospital mortality in the patients with chronic heart failure(CHF) at a retrospective analysis. Methods: 1415 patients hospitalized with CHF were included in a retrospective analysis. The patients with second anemia or other serious conditions that may be direct causes of anemia were excluded. Results: Anemia (Hb<120 g/L) was present in 413 of 1415 patients(29.2%). There was a positive relationship between NYHA-class and the prevalence of anemia, there were significiantly more patients with anemia in NYHA-class III and IV compared with class I and II(P<0.01). According to the different Hb level, in the patients a U-shaped relationship of mortality and Hb level was found. To adjust for other difference in baseline characteristic, at multivariable logistic analysis, Hb remained an independent predictor of the hospital mortality. Conclusions: Anemia is a common finding in patients hospitalized with CHF, the degree of anemia is correlated with the severity of CHF. Hb (< 160g/L) is an independent predictor of hospital mortality in the patients with CHF...
