Objects: To investigate the clinical characteristics and prognostic factors of 142 thymoma patients, and search for a new direction for better therapy outcome.Methods: 142 patients of thymoma were treated from January 1954 to January 2001 in Tianjin cancer hospital by Masaoka staging system, statistics with the SPSS method, review analysis the prognostic factors.Results: 116 patients underwent operation (81.7%), 84 patients underwent radical operation (72.4%), 9 patients underwent palliative operation (7.8%), 23 patients underwent biopsy (19.8%). 89 patients underwent radiotherapy (62.7%), 55 patients underwent postoperation radiotherapy (61.8%). The overall survival rates were 59.9% and 45.8% at 5 years, 10 years, respectively. (P<0.05). with 93.8%, 79.2% for stage 1, 79.3%, 55.2% for stage II, 53.1%, 34.4% for stage III, 0 for stage IV.Conclusions: Diagnosis of thymoma still depends on both clinical and pathological findings. The principal treatment is to resect the tumor as completely as possible, postoperative radiotherapy or chemotherapy according to the surgery status . staging and treatment is the most important prognostic factors.
