Microwave (MW) is a kind of electromagnetic radiations in the frequency range of 300 MHz to 300 GHz and belongs to nonionizing radiations, which biological effects mainly include two kinds of mechanism: thermal and non-thermal effects. In general, the effects of high intensity irradiation (power density larger than 10 mW/cm2) are mainly attributed to thermal and the long time exposure with low intensity microwave irradiations may cause the non-thermal effects. The response of the living thing to MW is nonlinear, and the biological effects of MW exhibit various"window effect".γray is an ionizing radiation and possesses high energy. It can react both directly on biological macromolecules and indirectly by the exciting and ionizing of H2O and other molecules to cause complex and strong biological effects. The free residues, which are produced from the exciting and ionizing macromolecules or H2O molecules, play a very important rule in the results that different biological macromolecules change in the structure and function.Bothγrays and MW are electromagnetic radiations in essence, different only in energy or frequency. However, the diversity of biological effects is occurred based on the living system in high order and with the intrinsic coherence and cooperativity. Much research work has focused on the mechanism and applications of biological effects of electromagnetic radiations in different frequency bands, but little has be done in the combined effect of ionizing and nonionizing radiations. It was reported that the experimental fact and law about the biological effects of MW (9.3GHz) or/andγray (at the exposure rate 5.0 mC/kg.hr), especially the window effects and rules of the cooperativity, were obtained, taking K562 as the biological model and normal human lymphocytes as comparison. The rates of cellular proliferation and apoptosis were taken as the measuring index. At last the biophysical model ofγray and MW cooperativity was acquired. From the experimental result, some conclusions or deduction might be gained, as follows:...
