Chigira et al proposed the "self-etching" concept in 1989, which was applied to dentistry without the need of rinsing, and the smear plug is then incorporated in the resin tag. In view of the convenient application, time saving, reduction of postoperative sensitivity and some other advantages, it has become a new type of adhesive technique, and gained growing attentions from researchers and clinicians. But up to now, it hasn't been so widely used in clinics due to the limited knowledge for their bonding characteristics.In this study, the bonding characteristics of self-etching bonding systems were exammmed for both enamel and dentin in different conditions with tensile test machine and scanning electron microscopy in vitro.
