Traumatic amputation of the thumb, index, middle, and ring fingers represents a serious insult to the hand, resulting in dramatic impairment of the hand function. Several reconstruction techniques have been described, such as toe-to-finger transfers, lengthening procedures, pollicization, and free osteocutaneous flaps. Although these techniques have many advantages in cases of distal amputation or mutilation, amputations at the base of the proximal phalanx of 2 or 3 digits are unsightly and too short for a standard digital prosthesis. Based on the osseointegration principle originally proposed by Branemark, we developed the osseointegrated implant (OI) with prosthesis, and study the bone-implant interfaces in the following animal study by implanting the osseointegrated implant (OI) into the medullary cavity of tibia of rabbits. Objectives: To develop a type of osseointegrated Titanium screw implants for medullary cavity implantation, and evaluate the bone-implant interfaces between the tibias of adult rabbits and the implant in different time in vivo by histological observation and biomechanical research. Offer a clinical alternative solution of osseointegrated implant with prosthesis to...
