Objective: To investigate the effects of type I diabetes mellitus on neurogenesis, astrocytes and cholinergic neurons of basal forebrain in adult rats, and their relationships with learning and memory impairments. Methods: Healthy adult Wistar rats (n=48) were randomly divided into the following groups: normal control group, diabetic group(rats induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozoticin) and treated group(3 units of long acting insulin was subcutaneously injected per day, fast blood glucose < 8.0mol/L).
