Purpose: This research tends to give a combined evaluation on treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) with Kang-Tai Capsule or together with acupuncture with warmed needles at Tianshu(ST25) and Dachangshu (BL25) through living quality core measuring scale of functional gastrointestinal diseases and the major symptom score sheet of IBS and to tell if the combination of medicine and acupuncture can get.higher effective power and better improvement of symptoms.Method: Sixty cases were randomly divided into treatment group and control group. Patients in treatment group were given 3 Kang-Tai capsules for 3 times a day. Patients in control group were given acupuncture treatment at Tianshu(ST25) and Dachangshu(BL25) every other day and also 3 Kang-Tai capsules for 3 times a day. Evaluate the patients through living quality core measuring scale of functional gastrointestinal diseases before and after the treatment. And evaluate the improvement on traditional Chinese symptoms through the major symptom score sheet of IBS which were categorized into four grades, which were fully recovery, excellence, effective and ineffective. Symptom remarks were also compared after two weeks and after four weeks. Result: Two groups were improved in symptoms as stomachache, frequency of stomachache, abdominal distension, upset and insomnia, anxiety, loose stool, debilitation and poor appetite (P<0.05);control group showed better improvement after two weeks in symptoms as stomachache, abdominal distension, upset and insomnia, and anxiety (P<0. 05);treatment group showed better improvement after four weeks in symptoms as stomachache, frequency of stomachache and loose stool (P<0. 05);both improved in living quality scores (P<0. 05) .Conclusions: Both groups can get improvements in symptoms and living quality scores;the two groups had no statistical differences in improvement of traditional Chinese symptoms;Kang-Tai Capsule with acupuncture with warmed needles at Tianshu(ST25) and Dachangshu(BL25) got higher total effective rate, faster improvement and more significant improvement in stomachache, frequency of stomachache and loose stool;In a word, these two methods are effective ways in treating IBS and worth spreading clinically.
