Background: Bronchial asthma is one of the most common chronic disease all over the world. The statistics shows that there are about one hundred and sixty million patients .The morbility and mortality of bronchial asthma in many countries have ascending tendency in recent twenty years.It is urgent to study the pathogenesis and cure rate of bronchial asthma deeply.Bronchial asthma is the chronic and inflammatory disease that takes place in the airway .The whole process involves many cells such as eosinophil,macrophages,mast cell,T lymphocyte,neutrophils,epithelial cell,etc.and cytokines.The researches indicate that the inbalance of normal ration and function of Th1/Th2 is the main pathogenic mechanism of bronchial asthma .Cytokines such as IL-4,5,8 released by Th2 and NO released by Macrophages take important roles in airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. IFN-r secreted by Th2 has some actions on inhibiting Th2. Many therapies have been taken to the bronchial asthma.TCM (traditional Chinese medicine )therapy on bronchial asthma can regulate Th1/Th2 balance state.They have been playing a marked role.The mechanism of action of Radix Rehmannial include anti-aging,decrease blood-sugar,diuresis,strenghen heart,anti-coagulation,increase immunity, etc. Most of these effects have relations with the Yin tonic function of Radix Rehmanniae .It is reported that Catalpol is effective active component of the Yin tonic effect of Radix Rehmanniae.The pathogenesis of bronchial asthma has not yet been explained.
