The blood-brain barrier (BBB) is a dynamic interface between the blood and the brain. It eliminates (toxic) substances from the endothelial compartment and supplies the brain with nutrients and other (endogenous) compounds. It can be considered as an organ protecting the brain and regulating its homeostasis. The structure and function of BBB are always altered and destroyed after cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury. The changes of nervous tissue are not only important parts of pathophysiologic alterations such as brain edema and inflammation but also key factors which affect the effects of medicine during the treatment. So, it will be helpful to guide the choices and uses of drugs clinically and to investigate the pathologic process deeply through the studies on BBB's alteration under the condition of ischemia/reperfusion. Taking corresponding measurements to stop the injury of cascade reaction and to lessen edema of brain and to decreases the number of dead neurone cells will be proved more and more important for doctors to prevention and cure the injury after cerebral...
