Background Diabetic retinopathy is believed to be a kind of chronic inflammation diseases in some extent. Retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells lie between the sensory retina and the choroids, constitute the outer blood retinal barrier and play a vital role in the retinal metabolism. Previous studies revealed that RPE cells participated in the development of diabetic retinopathy. But it was not clear the pathological chenge of RPE cells in the process.Triamcinolone acetonide (TA) is a kind of prolonged acting glucocorticoids, which widely used for intravitreal injection to treat macular edema (ME) caused by diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration and central retinal vein occlusion. It is suggested that TA could inhibit the migration of nutrophils and macrphages, and relieve inflammatory reaction and permeability of capillaries. It was not reported if TA could inhibit the expression of intercellular adhesion molecule 1 (ICAM-1) of RPE cells. Objective In this study we aimed to investigate the pathological reaction of hRPE cells under the effect of high glucose and inhibition of the reaction by TA.
