Objective: To evaluate clinical effectiveness of combined therapy of central serous chorioretinopathy (CSC) with Chinese medicine (modified Wuling San) and laser photocoagulation, and also to investigate the efficiency of the Chinese medicine in the peri-operational period. Methods: 71 diseased eyes of 68 cases of CSC were randomly allocated into different therapeutic groups. There were 27 eyes of 25 cases in the combined therapy group (Group A), treated with modified Wuling San together with laser photocoagulation. 24 eyes of 23 cases were in one of the control group (Group B), treated simply with laser photocoagulation, and another 20 eyes of 20 cases were in the other control group (Group C), treated only with the Chinese medicine. Comparison of the clinical therapeutic effects of these 3 groups was made. Results: (1) A week after therapy, significant improvement of visual acuity were found in Groups A and B, showing statistically different results with Group C, (P<0.01). But, 6 weeks after therapy, no significant difference of visual acuity were found among these 3 Groups, (P>0.05). (2) A month after therapy, in Group A the rate of retinal edema resolution was 96.3%; and 75.0% and 65.0% respectively in Goups B and C, showing statistical difference ,(P<0.05). (3) A month after therapy, patients of 3 Groups showed significant improvement of the total grayscale within 10 degrees of the visual field as compared to that before treatment, (P<0.01); there was also significant difference between Groups A and C. (4) The delitescence of P-VEP of patients of these 3 Groups showed significant difference as compared to that before treatment, (P<0.05); and there was also marked difference in this respect between Group A and control groups, (P<0.05). (5) A month after treatment, the overall effectiveness of Group A was 96.3%, and that of the control groups were 70.8% and 60.0% , respectively, showing statistical difference, (P<0.05 and P<0.01). But, 6 weeks after treatment, The overall effectiveness of Group A was 100%, and there were 95.8% and 90.0% respectively in the control groups, showing no statistical difference. Conclusion: (1) All these 3 ways of treatment, (with modified Wuling San only, with...
