Background: Cryptorchidism is the most common congenital urogenital deformation in childhood, affecting approximately 4% of newborn males. Due to the ectopic location, spermatogenic function of cryptorchid is severely damaged. Spermatogenesis is a highly complicated process of cytodifferentiation, adjusted by hormones and interaction between testicular cells. High percentage of abnormal sperm and few mature sperm can be found in degenerated seminiferous tubules of cryptorchid testis. Quite a few theories have been raised to explain the aspermatogenesis in cryptorchidism, yet the cytology and molecular mechanism of this process is still unclear. While the discovery and study on ALR opened a new door to the exploration of spermatogenesis and the pathological mechanism of cryptorchidism.Alrp is intensively expressed in testis, the greatest amounts of ALR are observed in spermatogonia and early spermatocytes and its expression is regulated during spermatogenesis. Studies showed that the processes which embryo germline stem cells differentiated into Ad spermatogonia and appearance of primary spermatocytes are crucial steps for...
