Objective: To investigate the protective effect of augmenter of liver regeneration (ALR) on nephrotoxic damage and renal cell apoptosis in rat kidneys and explore the mechanism. Methods: One hundred and fifty Wistar rats were randomly divided into 5 groups: group A (normal control group), group B (gentamincin 140mg/kg+100μg/kg saline group), group C (gentamincin 140mg/kg +100μg/kg blank plasmid group), group D1 (gentamincin 140mg/kg +80μg/kg rrALR group), group D2 (gentamincin 140mg/kg +160μg/kg rrALR group). The levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN), serum creatinine (Scr) and urinary NAG (UNAG) were measured with routine method. The histopathologic changes were observed by periodic acid-Schiff (PAS) staining. Protein expression of ALR, PCNA, Bcl-2 and Bax in renal tissue was detected using immunohistochemistry and Western blot. Tubular cells apoptosis was measured by DNA laddering, transmission electron microscope and TUNNEL.
