Bupleurum is the dry root of Bupleurum Chinese DC or B. scorzoneri folium Wild, in which essential oil and saikosaponin are the effective components. They both have antipyretic effect, but the saikosaponin can not be injected intravenously for its hemolysis. In this study Chaihu Essential Oil Submicron Emulsion Injection (CEOSEI) and Chaihuang Pellets were prepared respectively, which were administrated in injection way and orally. The Chaihu Injection extensively used in various pyretic symptoms in clinic is the autoclaved solution with Tween-80 as the solubilizer. However Tween-80 can't be injected intravenously because of its hemolysis, and the patients suffer from obvious pain for its irritation. In this studies submicron emulsion was chosen as drug carrier to prepare oil-in-water submicron emulsion of Chaihu essential oil for intravenous and intramuscular administration to improve the stability of Chaihu essential oil and reduce irritations in order to provide a safe and effective antipyretic injection of traditional Chinese herb. The saikosaponin has long been used in various fever symptoms, chronic hepatitis, etc. Scutellaria has been used for thousands of years in which Baicalin was the main component. It has been extensively and long-termly used to treat respiratory infection disease, acute dysentery, etc. The combination of Scutellaria and Bupleurum preparations has reliable curative effect on cold and fever. In this study Chaihuang Pellets were prepared and its quality was evaluated in order to cure cold and fever quickly and reliably.Hexanal and heptanal in Chaihu essential oil were determined by GC method. The stability of Chaihu oil was examined. The result showed that hexanal and heptanal were about 190 μg·g-1 and 13.5 μg·g-1 in oil, 24.5 μg·mL-1 and 4.6 μg·mL-1 in preparation respectively. The submicron emulsion was obtained by passing the coarse emulsion through...
