Objective This study is aimed to know the basal status of each social factors in the 116 maternal and child health surveillance sites and understand the prevalence and tendency of maternal mortality rate (MMR) in China, to analyze the composition of reasons causing maternal death and find the main influencing factors, to explore the strategies of reducing maternal mortality rate (MMR), finally to provide some of scientific basis for preventing and controlling maternal death effectively, improving women's health status of safety related to pregnancy and baby delivery and decreasing MMR.Methods Based on the data of MMR and the social data collected from 116 maternal and child health surveillance sites form 1996 to 2002, The statistical representations were applied to analyze the basal status of each social factors and the prevalence and tendency of maternal mortality rate (MMR) in China and the composition of reasons causing maternal death. The simple correlation and the path analysis were used to find out the main social factors and direct factors and indirect factors.Results The regional data on socioeconomic, educational, communication, social insurance, hygiene and demography status have developed.
