BACKGROUND: Postoperative agitation in children is a problem after anesthesia, which directly interferes with the children's recovery and decreases satisfaction of the operation. This study adopted a randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled design to explore the selection of sedatives and their safe effective dosage applied to the children in PACU by administrating different doses of midazolam with or without tramadol. METHODS: 120 ASA class I-II children (aged 2-7 yr) undergoing general anesthesia for surgery and having agitation (Ramsay Sedation Scale <2, Agitation Score System ≥ 3) in PACU were included in this study. The children were randomized into 6 groups: group N (placebo), group Ml (midazolam 0.05 mg/kg.), group M2 (midazolam 0.1 mg/kg), group T (tramadol 1 mg/kg), group MT1 (midazolam 0.05 mg/kg and tramadol 1mg/kg), and group MT2 (midazolam 0.1 mg/kg and tramadol 1 mg/kg).
