Objective: To optimize MR imaging technique and parameters for carotid atherosclerotic plaque by evaluating the image quality.Methods: Carotid MR imaging was performed in two groups of healthy volunteers (15 persons for each group) at a 1.5T MR scanner. Sequences including: 1. cardiac-gated and peripheral-gated FSE-DIRT1WI; 2. â‘  SE-DIRT1WI, FSE-DIRT1WI with Echo Train Length of 5 and 9; â‘¡ FSE-DIRT2WI with TE of 41ms, 84ms and 96ms; â‘¢ 3D-T0F with TE of 7. 0ms, 4. 8ms and 4. 0ms were carried out. Acquisition Time (TA), Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR), Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR), integrity of vessel wall, blood flow artifact were measured and compared in each group with different parameters. Paired-Samples T Test, Randomized block design ANOVA (SNK was used for comparing each other) were used for measurement data, x~2 test was used for count data.Results: 1. There were no significant differences of TA, SNR, CNR, Integrity of vessel wall and blood flow artifact between cardiac-gated and peripheral-gated FSE-DIRT1WI (p>0. 05). 2. â‘ SNR,CNR,TA between SE-DIRT1WI, FSE-DIRT1WI with ETL of 5 and 9 showed significant differences (p<0.05), while differences of integrity of vessel wall, blood flow artifact were of no statistical significant (p>0. 05) . Of the three T1 weighted sequences, TA of FSE-DIRT1WI with ETL of 9 was shorter than that of others and SNR was higher. CNR of FSE-DIRT1WI with ETL of 9 was higher than SE-DIRT1WI, while CNR between FSE-DIRT1WI with ETL of 5 and 9 was of no statistical difference. â‘¡ SNR, CNR, TA, Integrity of vessel wall all showed significant differences (p<0.05) between FSE-DIRT2WI with different TE (41ms, 84ms and 96ms) ,blood flow artifact were of no significant difference (p>0.05).
