Master of Medicine (M.M.) education pilot program in China officially started since the promulgation of "Master of Medicine Interim Measures" by the State Council Academic Degree Committee in 1998. Master of Medicine education aims at cultivating high-class, clinical doctors with requested professional knowledge base and capabilities in addition to corresponding academic theoretical knowledge by high-level fundamental medicine learning and clinical professional training. Wenzhou Medical College was approved as a Master of Medicine education pilot unit in 2000, having a current enrollment of approximately 200 M.M. Candidates. Judging from the development process of Master of Medicine education in Wenzhou Medical College, the author believes that it is urgently needed to set up an objective, just and comprehensive M. M. clinical professional capabilities assessment method. Although relevant state departments have issued rules such as "Capability Assessment Method for Master of Medicine Degree Candidates", "Assessment Content and Requirements for Master of Medicine Degree Candidates", which are comprehensive in content and requirements, the instructive requirements are rather general as stated by words such as "master", "understand" and "be familiar with". Therefore, ever since the launching of Master of Medicine program, it has always been a study topic to set up an assessment mechanism in line with national standards yet applicable in Wenzhou Medical College. As clinical medicine covers many disciplines, this study takes an approach in ophthalmology and aims at setting up clinical skills graduation assessment indicators system for Master of Medicine degree candidates in ophthalmology.This study covers the following 3 aspects: First, carry out research on graduation assessment of clinical capabilities of M. M. degree candidates in major medical colleges in Eastern China. Second, in-depth analyze graduation assessment cases of clinical capabilities of Wenzhou Medical College ophthalmology M. M. degree candidates. Finally, set up ophthalmology M. M. degree candidates system of clinical capabilities assessment indicators.The study methods employed in this paper are: 1. Literature research for the general situation of M. M. degree education in China; 2. Survey research method: (1) questionnaire: First for views and suggestions of tutors, management staffs and students on the current ophthalmology M. M. graduates assessment; then for their views and suggestions on the proposed graduation assessment indicators system. (2) Interview: (1) interview persons in charge of M. M. education program management from Medical College of Zhejiang University, Shanghai Second Medical University for their views and suggestions on M. M. degree candidates' graduation assessment methods.(2)Interview management staffs and tutors from Ophthalmology College of Wenzhou Medical College for their views and suggestions on the current ophthalmology M.M. graduates assessment system.(3)Interview graduate department chief and relevant experts from Wenzhou Medical College for selection and weighing of indicators of clinical capabilities assessment of ophthalmology M.M.degree candidates. 3.Case study: Research in-depth the general situation of ophthalmology M. M. graduates assessment in recent years in Wenzhou Medical College.
