Erythropoietin (EPO) is the hematopoietic factor responsible for the production of red blood cells and for this function is produced mainly by the adult kidney. In recent years, EPO and its receptor (Erythropoietin Receptor, EPOR) have been shown to be present in tissues outside of the bone marrow, including the heart. Neurology research found that EPO and EPO-R can not only protect nervers tissue against apoptosis but also promoting nervers tissue proliferation and differentiation. Many of these multiple functions parallel its action in hematopoiesis. The protection of myocardium from ischemia by EPO has been confirmed in animal experiments. Then the specific receptor--— EPOR has been shown to be present in postischemic myocardium of adult animals and homo-sapien. But neither how long did EPOR be expressed after ischemic nor weither adult human' ischemic myocardium could express EPO is not definite. In this study, observed myocardium tissue of adult non-ischemic heart disease during Cardio-Pulmonary Bypass surgery operation, we found that it did transcribe EPO mRNA and EPOR mRNA; And the dosage of intra-celluar mRNA depends on the latitude of ischemic time. So the found hint that adult human myocardium has the capability of expression EPO and EPOR after myocardial ischemia in short time; myocardium tissue could priming the process of expression self-protect gene in Hypometabolism state with ischemia; and maybe, if give the suitable ligand of the receptor in adequate opportunity , we can get a satisfactory result of protection myocardium from ischemia injury.
