Objectives: To study the relationship between morning blood pressure surge (MBPS) of patients with elderly hypertension and endothelial function, myocardial remodeling and carotid imtima media thickness by measuring ambulatory blood pressure, vasoactive substances that synthesis and secrete from endothelial cells, myocardial remodeling and imtima media thickness and plaques of carotid. Methods: Sixty patients with elderly hypertension were separated into two groups by the degree of MBPS. Thirty three patients whose MBPS is no less than 50mmHg are included in the first group and twenty seven patients whose MBPS is less than 50mmHg are included in the second group. NO and ET-1 in serum are measured on all patients by nitric acid revrt enzyme analysis and ray immune analysis and the patients all are examined by M-mode echocardiography and carotid ultrasonography. Results: In the first group, the content of NO in serum was lower; the content of ET-1 in serum and the ratio of left ventricular hypertrophy were higher than that in the second group. The difference was statistically distinct (p<0.05). There is no statistic difference between the ratio of the imtima media thickness and plaques of carotid in two groups (p>0.05).Conclusion: The degree of MBPS in patients with elderly hypertension is closely related with the insult degree of endothelial function, myocardial remodeling and is not distinctly related with ratio of imtima media thickness and plaques of carotid.
