Objective To evaluate the expression of extracellular matrix metallo-proteinase inducer (EMMPRIN) and matrix metalloproteinase-7( MMP-7) in transitional cell carcinoma of bladder (TCCB) and its significanceMethods Immunohistochemistry was used to detect the expression of EMMPRIN and MMP-7 in 60 cases of TCCB(Gradeâ… in 25 cases , Gradeâ…¡in 15 , Grade III in 20) and 8 subjects with normal bladder tissues . Of the 60 cases 29 had superficial (=pT1) bladder cancer and 31 had invasive(=pT2) bladder cancer . x2 test was used to assess the relationship between expression of EMMPRIN,MMP-7 and tumor grade, stageResults The expression of EMMPRIN and MMP-7 were negative in all normal bladder tissues but high in TCCB. Of the 60 cases, 42 were positive and 18 were negative for EMMPRIN. 14 cases of Gradeâ… , 9 of Gradeâ…¡and 19 of Grade III were positive for EMMPRIN . Positive staining was seen in 19 of the superficial and 23 of the invasive cancer cases. EMMPRIN positivity was correlated with high histogical grade, but no significant difference was observed between superficial bladder cancer and invasive bladder cancer.40 were positive and 20 were negative for MMP-7 . 13 cases of Gradeâ… , 10 of Gradeâ…¡and 17 of Gradeâ…¢were positive for MMP-7 . Positive staining was seen in 18 of the superficial and 22 of the invasive cancer cases. MMP-7 positivity was correlated with high histo- gical grade, but no significant difference was observed between superficial bladder cancer and invasive bladder cancer. The expression of EMMPRIN in TCCB was closely correlated with MMP-7 (rs=0.617, P<0.001)Conclusions The positive expression of EMMPRIN and MMP-7 correlated with the malignant degree of BTCC. EMMPRIN and MMP-7 could be useful indicator for the assessment of prognosis of BTCC. There was close correlation between EMMPRIN and MMP-7.
