Objective To observe the role of EPO in brain injuries through studying the changes of S100βprotein in serum after severe injury of brain and hemorrhagic shock. Methods one hundred and fourty adult maleness Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups, trauma group, shock and trauma group and Erythropoietin increases shock and trauma intervention group, the control group (2h, 6h,12h,24h,72h,5d,7d. n = 5 ). The experimental TBI model was established by Feeney's method, and the shock model was established by exsanguinating femoral artery. The changes of S100βwere measured by ELISA.Results The level of S100B protein reached the peak after 6 hours in merely trauma group and shock and trauma group. And then the level of S100 was higher in shock group than in merely trauma group at other time points. The results were significant difference (P<0.01). The level of S100βprotein reached the peak after 6 hours in merely trauma group and shock and trauma group. And then the level of S100βwas higher in control group than in experimental group at other time points. The results were significant difference (P<0.01).Conclusion S100B protein can react the extent of head injury and secondary lesion. EPO has obviously protective effect on brain injury by degrading the level of S100βprotein severe injury of brain and hemorrhagic shock.
