Objective: With the application of the microwave in military, communications, commerce and medical treatment, the damage to health has showed more attention. We investigated the damaging effect of S-HPM (S-high power microwave) on rats in the study in order to provide data for formulating health protection level and measure.Materials and methods: Wistar rats were exposed to high power microwave of 2.856GHz in different pulses and doses as experimental model. We detected a large number of data such as immune function, endocrine function, antioxygen function and bio-chemistrial data reacting the function of heart, liver, kidney and metabolism function.Results:1. Counts of peripheral blood leucocytes and the sorting cells increased after 24h exposing in the S-HPM of 5mW/cm2 and 100ns pulse. Some data reacting the function of liver and kidney revealed abnormally. The content of testosterone, the total count of spermatozoa and the rate of CD4~+/CD8~+ T lymphocyte decreased after 24h. Under the same irradiation dose, rats exposing in the S-HPM of 500ns and 2000ns pulses had not been affected significantly.2. The total counts of peripheral blood leucocytes and lymphocytes decreased by exposing in different power density of S-HPM (100ns pulse). So, we thought that the immune function had been inhibited in some degree. Results showed that the redox state changed, the endocrine function disorded. The function of heart, liver and kidney decreased significantly. In the experiment, we examined that the single-strand DNA of lumphocyte breaked and micronuclear rates of reticulocyte in blood rised. Conclusion: 1. As a threshold value to protect the health, the dose of 5mW/cm~2 is not suitable. 2. Rats exposing to S-HPM showed a series of disorder in immune function, endocrine function, antioxidation function and other systems.
