Objective: The purpose of this study were to determine low intensity pulse ultrasound(LIPU) accelerated the maturation of regenerate bone when applied after distraction in a rabbit model.Method: 36 skeletally mature New Zealand White rabbits were randomly assigned to LIPU treatment group and the control group. All animals were undergone mid-diaphyseal tibia osteotomy and were immobilized in an Orthofix M103 Mini lengther, After a seven day latency period, Gradual distraction of 0.5 millimeters every twelve hours for 10 days, produced 10 mm distraction. A 4-weeks course of LIPU stimulation were applied over the distraction site for twenty minutes daily starting immediately after the completion of distraction. Radiographs were taken after osteotomy and after distraction and 4 weeks after distraction. Total mineralized areas and grey value of the callus were measured by Image J software. 36 animals were sacrificed at 4 8 12 weeks respectively, All involved samples were used to make decalcified sections and stained with HE staining , Masson's trichrome staining, VG staining and observed under lightmicroscope. The areas of new bone were measured and it expressed as a percentage of the total callus area.Result: Radiographs revealed a significantly larger callus and gay value in the LIPU-treated group at 4 weeks after distraction compared to control group. Histomorphometry revealed the new bone in LIPU-treated is early than control groups And revealed significantly less new bone in the control groups at 4 weeks after distraction and no significantly different in the LIPU-treated groups at 8 ,12weeks after distraction compared with control group .Conclusion: LIPUs was found to increase the size of the distraction callus and it might alter the composition of regenerate bone when applied during the consolidation phase of distraction osteogenesis.
