Objective: To investigate clinical effects of immunotherapy based dendritic cells (DC) and cytokine induced killer (CIK) with general treatment on patients with cancer. Methods: Sixty patients with solid cancer in No 1 surgical department in PLA 307 hospital from Februry 2003 to June 2006 were divided 2 groups randomly, which were the control group and immunotherapy with general treatment group. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMC) was divided from the patients who received immunotherapy at first,then dendritic cells and cytokine induced killer were produced and pulsed with GM-CSF and IL-4 in vitro. The treatment group received DCs fours times and CIK two times at an interval of 14 days after general treatment. The control group only received chemotherapy. T lymphocyte subtypes and NK cell in peripheral blood, the white cell and the values of liver and kidney biochemistry of two group patients were analyzed and clinical effects were observed. Side effects were also observed. Results:The levels of CD3~+,CD4~+,CD4~+/CD8~+ and NK cell in the immunotherapy group increased after treatment, which showed significant statistical difference (P=0.010,P=0.026,P=0.021, P=0.016), while those of the control group had no significant changes. Changes of cell immune index(CD3~+,CD4~+,CD4~+/CD8~+)of immunotherapy group and control group showed significant statistical difference (P=0.001,P=0.023,P=0.012).The white cell and the values of liver and kidney biochemistry in immunotherapy group patients do not show statistical difference after treatment (P>0.05), while the white cell and the values of liver in control group show significant statistical difference(P<0.05).Clinical effects show significant statistical difference between the two groups(P<0.05).No side effects were observed. Conclusion: Immunotherapy based dendritic cells and cytokine induced killer with general treatment on patients with solid cancer can improve T lymphocyte subtypes and NK cell ratio in peripheral blood of the patients with solid cancer,While the white cell and the values of liver and kidney biochemistry in peripheral blood had no significant changes. Immunotherapy based dendritic cells and cytokine induced killer maybe play an important role on the treatment of solid cancer,and it can enhance clinical effects on patients with solid cancer. Also immunotherapy can improve prognosis.
