Objective: Based on the clinical result from the use of Huoxiang Zhengqi powder toprevent histamine release of basophiles as well as to prevent diseases with the typeâ… allergy reaction which can heal the Asthma of cold type, this research aims to explorefirstly the clinical effects of giving traditional Chinese medicine on cough variantasthma (CVA) patients, and secondly the rate of relapsed cough. Through observingand evaluating the clinical effects via means, such as FEV1%, PEF, etc., and therelapsed cough rate on 62 CVA patients/subjects-among which 31 subjects regardedas the Experimental Group (EG) were given a treatment of both Western medicine andcertain traditional Chinese medicine, i.e. Huoxiang Zhengqi powder, of which thefunction has been known as relieving exterior syndrome with the drugs pungent inflavor and warm in property, regulating the circulation of Qi, phlegm resolving, andwarming & tonifying spleen and kidney; the rest 31 subjects regarded as the ControlGroup (CG) were given Western medicine only-and then comparing the clinicalfindings from both groups for statistical proof, this research further aims to treat withtraditional Chinese medicine CVA patients' chronic cough as well as to reduce thepossibility of chronic cough's turning into typical asthma.Methodology: In order to evaluate the clinical effects of Huoxiang Zhengqi powderon CVA patients, 62 subjects diagnosed as CVA patients were randomly divided andlabeled as 31 EG subjects and 31 CG subjects. The EG subjects received 1mg ofketotifen twice a day, 100mg of aminophylline twice a day, and Huoxiang Zhengqipowder once a day; the CG subjects, both 1mg of ketotifen and 100mg ofaminophylline twice a day and 10mg Montelukast once a day. Certain [clinical]effects-evaluating means including clinical symptoms, FEV1%, and PEF of bothgroups were applied and the results compared after receiving the treatment for twoweeks and for four weeks respectively. Furthermore, relapsed cough was alsoobserved and compared one month after the termination of the treatment. Findings: Two weeks after receiving the combined treatment, the symptoms of the EGsubjects were clearly alleviated, both the FEV1% and the PEF increased remarkably;in other words, the overall outcome was more satisfying than that of the CG subjectsreceiving Western medicine only. Furthermore, one month after terminating thetreatment, the relapsed cough rate of the EG subjects was lower than that of the CGsubjects. All the differences have been statistically proved as significant.
