| Objective To design and carry out a career group guidance program, to assist baccalaureate nursing students to explore their career, to examine the effects of the career group guidance on the baccalaureate nursing students, and to explore whether group counseling is feasible to make career planning and acquire experience for further study, and to provide guidances and suggestions for career group guidance being implemented in nursing education.Methods A total of 32 college juiors in the school of nursing, Central South University were selected in the experiment. The students were randomly assigned to an experimental group (n = 16) or a no-treatment control group (n = 16). The experimental group received 8 120-minute group-guidance sessions about career development.The self-designed Nursing Career Planning Inventory, and Index of well-being were used to assess the students' career planning levels and subjective well-being before and after the intervention. The self-designed Satisfaction Inventory, interview and students'self-report were used to assess the effects of the group guidance after the intervention. The Observer,leader and students also gived their assessments after each session. All statistical analyses were done with Chi square-test, Premeasure-postmeasure design. Results①Before the intervention, there were no significantly differences between the experimental group and the control group on the rate of the positive answer to all questions on the self-designed Nursing Career Planning Inventory. After the intervention, (1) the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know the nursing professions clearly in the experimental group was higher than the control group(P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know your advantages and disadvantages in career development clearly in the experimental group was higher than the control group (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know your career plan in the next 3 to 5 years clearly in the experimental group was higher than the control group (P<0. 01); the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know the step of career planning clearly in the experimental group was higher than the control group (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know the relationship between what you are learning now and the future career clearly in the experimental group was higher than the control group(P<0. 01); the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Are you interested in career planning in the experimental group was higher than the control group (P<0. 01) .(2) The rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know the professions related to nursing clearly in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know your advantages and disadvantages of career development clearly in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01); the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know your career plan in the next 3 to 5 years clearly in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who think they have already create a career vision after exploring for some time in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know the step of career planning clearly in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Do you know the relationship between what you are learning at present and the future career clearly in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01) ; the rate of those who answer yes to the question that Are you interested in career planning in the experimental group was increased (P<0. 01).②After the intervention, the members showed a higher degree of satisfaction to the group.③Most members thought the location, times and contents were good, and felt well after the intervention.④Interviewing and members'self-report showed the group guidance has a positive effect on the members.⑤The observer's assessments demonstrated there were 6 sessions that had good atmosphere and 5 sessions in which members communicated well in the all of 8 group-guidance sessions.⑥The leader's assessments demonstrated there were 7 sessions that had good atmosphere and 5 sessions in which members communicated well in the all of 8 group guidance sessions.Conclusion:①The career group guidance emerges being effective in enhancing the career planning of nursing students.②Members have a high degree of satisfaction for the group.③Interviewing and members'self-report indicates a positive effect of the group guidance on the members.④The group atmosphere and the members' interaction are both active. |
