Purpose To investigate the clinical character of motor neuron disease and study the value of electromyogram and electro-neurogram of thoracic paraspinal muscle, sternomastoid muscle and appendicular muscles in motor neuron disease's diagnosis so as to increase the accuracy of the disease in early diagnosis. Methods To retrospectively analyze the clinical material of 57 patients diagnosed with motor neuron disease, including their ages of onset, gender, nationality, symptoms, the sites of onset and their primary diagnosis. To study the course of disease, and electromyogram of thoracic paraspinal muscle, sternomastoid muscle and appendicular muscles in different clinical type. Results overall 390 muscles were examined. among which, small amount ~ large amount(+~+++) of fibrillation potential and positive sharp wave were found in 341 muscles. Extensive neurogenic damage was discovered in the 57 cases of MND. Three is statistics sign between electromyogram of sternomastoid muscle, thoracic paraspinal muscle and different clinical types (P<0.05); Three is statistics sign between the course of disease and the degree of fibrillation potential and positive sharp wave (P<0.05). Conclusion Early muscle electrophysiology examination may be helpful for MND diagnosis in early diagnosis. Muscle electromyogram examination for sternomastoid muscle and thoracic paraspinal muscle should be taken as routine examination for early diagnosis of MND.
