Objective This study is to determine the relationship between epidermal growth factor receptor(EGFR) expression and mucin 5AC( MUC5AC) synthesis in human cholecyst with cholecystolithiasis.Method cholecyst specimens were obtained from 104 patients who were undergoing cholecystectomy, and the samples were taken from areas remote to the lesion. EGFR and MUC5AC protein expression were examined using immunohistochemical analysis in cholecyst from 54 subjects with cholecystolithiasis,26 subjects with cholecystic polypus and 24 subjects with normal cholecyst which come from hepatectomy or pancreatectomy. Results Weak MUC5AC proteinsignals were detected in the cholecyst of the controls, cholecystic polypus, normal cholecyst in comparison with stronger signal in the cholecystolithiasis(P < 0. 05). Weak EGFR proteinsignals were detected in the cholecyst of the controls, cholecystic polypus, normal cholecyst in comparison with stronger signal in the cholecystolithiasis(P < 0. 05). There was significant positive correlation between the expression of the EGFR and the expression of the MUC5AC positive staining in 25 subjects( r = 0.978,P < 0. 001).conclusion It is suggested that there may be correlation between MUC5AC,EGFR and the formation of cholecystolithiasis...
