As a part of the technological development of a commercial chairside dental CAD/CAM system with our own intelligent property, the theoretical method and actualized techniques of standard teeth modeling, and the method of designing inlays are researched.Firstly, the status of resent researches on dental CAD/CAM of inlays is analyzed and the main contents of the paper are showed. Based on the analysis of the distribution of the features on the points cloud models of standard teeth, the methods are presented to extract the dental morphological features, such as cupsps, fossae, and the related geometrical features, like the margin of the gingival , the curve closed the occlusal marginal ridge. Then, an approach to construct standard teeth topological structure by means of these features is proposed in the view of both oral anatomy and CAD technology. This approach can not only simplify the process to design restoration, but also lay a better foundation of the future system for the quick design of inlays, crown, bridges, etc.Moreover, considering the structure of inlays and the state of oral dentition of patients, the technologies of designing inlays are presented, utilizing standard-teeth models or non-standard-teeth models to design the occlusal and adjacent surfaces. In this way, the process of designing inlays is simplified. It helps to restore the configuration and function of decayed tooth fast and reduce the treatment period.Finally, the conclusions are given and the future works are prospected.
