Objective:To investigate the effect of Stabilization Splint on masticatory muscle activity in patients with temporomandibular disorders.Methods:10 cases were choosen from the patients whose chief complaint was maxillofacial region muscle pain and temporomandibular joint clicking in our hospital, according to the indication of Stabilization Splint. The electromyography of bilateral anterior temporalis(TA),and masseter muscle(MM)was taken in 10 TMD patients before treatment and the insertion of the Stabilization splint 3 months later without splint in situ.In all patients, the masticatory muscle asymmetry index was compared before and after the Stabilization splint treatment.Results:1.After three months of the Stabilization splint treatment, all the 10 patients' masticatory muscle(TA,MM)electrical activity at postural position and intercuspal position were significantly reduced(P<0.05).2.With the insertion of Stabilization splint 3 months later, masticatory muscle total asymmetry(Astot)was reduced(P<0.05).3.With the insertion of Stabilization splint 3 months later, anterior temporalis asymmetry(ASTA)was reduced(P<0.05).4.With the insertion of Stabilization splint 3 months later, masseter muscle asymmetry(ASMM)was reduced(P<0.05) Conclusions:1.After the Stabilization splint treatment on the patients with TMD, masticatory muscle electrical activity at postural position and intercuspal position were significantly reduced than before, masticatory muscle asymmetry in intercuspal position is improved.2.The Stabilization splint treatment is an effective way to treat the TMD patients.3.The EMG can objectively react the detail condition of masticatory muscle function, according to the EMG examination of patients with TMD,it can direct the clinical treatment.
