Objective To report the short-term outcome of primary total knee arthroplasty with prothesis of GenesisⅡasymmetrical posterior condyles and its technical characteristics. Methods From Apr.2005,a total of 65 patients(74 knees)had primary TKRs of the same prosthesis at our Department,54 knees were osteoarthritic, 16 rheumatoid,4 ankylosing spondylitis.Clinical evaluations were performed according to the Hospital for Special Surgery scores;radiographic assessment followed the guidelines of the Knee Society.Postoperative recovery of quadriceps strength and the extensor mechanism was also evaluated. Results 5 were lost contact and 1 died of irrelevant cause, leaving 67 knees in 59 patients for inculsion in this study. The mean follow-up period was 18 months. The mean value of the HSS score was 55.4 preoperatively,86.5 at the end of the follow-up.The mean postoperative range of motion was 108°.There was significantly difference of HSS(p<0.05),while average ROM had no significant differences.1 patient had a superficial infection and postoperative stiffness of the knee who undertook a debridement and manipulation. Most patients regained their quadriceps strength at 3rd or 4th month postoperatively. No prosthetic loosening or anterior knee pain was found at the latest follow-up.The angulations of tibial osteotomy were all within 3°. Conclusion The short-term clinical results demonstrate that prothesis of GenesisⅡasymmetrical posterior condyles can reduce the anterior knee pain much more postoperatively.Long-term results need further observation.
