Objective To investigate clinical features, diagnostic methods and treatments for adrenal medullary hyperplasia(AMH), thus to improve the level of diagnosis and treatment of AMH.Methods Clinical data of 7 cases of AMH were retrospectively analysed. Results According to the clinical and biochemical features of AMH, all the 7 cases were verified on catecholamine assay(CA).In 4 of the patients, there was no tumor mass found on imaging procedures neither in the adrenal gland nor outside the gland. An adrenal tumor mass was noted in 3 cases and a diagnosis of pheochromocytoma has been made. 4 patients underwent unilateral adrenalectomy with 2 cured of the disease and 2 improved. Unilateral main partial adrenalectomy was undertaken for 1 case with fully recover. Bilateral adrenalectomy and pedicled autotransplantation of medullary-excised adrenal gland was undertaken for 2 cases with satisfactory outcome. Conclusions AMH should be differentiated from pheochromocytoma by imaging procedures. Definite diagnosis depends on surgical exploration and pathological examination.Surgical removal is the method of radical cure, and staging operation through waist is a better choice. Pedicled autotransplantation of medullary-excised adrenal gland has gotten satisfactory effect in treating the two sides adrenal gland diseases.
