Meningiomas of the tuberculum sellae region can cause insidious visual loss by opticnerve compression. During recent decades, marked advances have been made in thedevelopment of microsurgical techniques, and a dramatic improvement of surgicalresults for tuberculum sellae meningiomas with respect to morbidity and mortality hasbeen reported. There have also been many reports detailing visual outcome aftersurgery. But the result seemed not to be as well as the surgery. Objective:To investigate the clinical characteristics of tuberculum sellae meningiomas and theprognostic factors with particular attention to visual outcome. Methods:we retrospectively analyzed 60 patients who came from Qilu hospital from the year2002 to 2007 with such tumours. All patients underwent microsurgical tumourresection. Univariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test. Age, gender, tumour origin, extent of resection, tumour size, surgical approach, severity of visualloss, duration of visual symptoms, laterality of eye involvement and visual fielddeficiency were assessed to investigate the related prognostic factors. Results:We found that patient age, tumour size, severity of visual loss and duration of visualsymptoms have the significance for evaluating the visual outcome. According to thispoint of view, trying to detect the existence of the tumour at an early stage should bethe best way to improve the visual outcome. Conclusions: This is a retrospective analysis. We report a series of 60 patients with tuberculum sellae meningiomas and analyzed the prognostic factors correlated with the visual outcome. The following factors were found to be of significance for a better visual outcome: Patient age, tumour size, severity of visual loss and duration of visual symptoms. According to the significant factors, we can draw to the conclusion that if the suprasellar meningiomas could be detected at an early stage, there will be a good complete resection as well as a good visual outcome.
