Objective To investigate the relationship among juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula (JPD), choledocholithiasis and pancreatitis. Methods The results of endoscopic retrograde cholangiopanceatography were retrospectively reviewed in 519 consective patients from 2001 to 2007,analyzing the JDP and the relationship among juxtapapillary duodenal diverticula , choledocholithiasis and pancreatitis. Results The incidences of JPD were 29.29% in all patients. 76.97% JPD patients were founded to be complicated with choledocholithiasis ; JPD patients with the diameter of common bile duct≥2.0cm had a 89.06% incidence of common bile duct stone, which was significantly higher than that of common bile duct <2.0cm (68.18%,P<0.05). There was no obvious correlation between the quantity of diverticula and incidence of choledocholithiasis(P>0.05); The mean diameter of JPD without choledocholithiasis was 1.52±0.54cm,which was significantly larger than that in patients without JPD and choledocholithiasis(1.21±0.56cm, P<0.05); The incidences of JPD increased corresponding to aging (P<0.05). The incidences of acute pancreatitis after ERCP were 3.27% (12/367) in patients without JPD while 7.24% (11/152) in JPD patients ,however JPD was not associated with the incidence of post-ERCP pancreatitis (P>0.05).The incidences of choledocholithiasis were higher than pancreatitis in JPD patients(P<0.05).Conclusion JPD may be an important factor in the information of choledocholithiasis and the occurrence of actue pancreatitis.
