The Polyester Surgical Patch For Inguinal Hernia Repair: An Open Parallel Controlled Clinical Study

Objective:To determine whether the polyester surgical patch(from Shanghai CHEST Medical Technological Company) was as effective and safe as other patch(polypropylene,B|BRAUN) for inguinal hernia repair,and provide an objective evidence for surgeons to choose which patch for inguinal hernia repair.Methods:Forty patients who had a primary diagnosis of inguinal hernia prospectively were included in the study.Twenty were treated with polyester surgical patch with Lichtenstein inguinal hernioplasty,the other twenty were treated with polypropylene mesh as well.The primary results included pain,walk upright,mass of the incision,the healing of the incision(the fifth day,the first month,the third month),the recurrence rate of hernia(during three months).The secondary results included vital signs(the first day to the fifth day,three times aday), red swelling of the skin,tenderness,infection,rejection,effusion(the first day to the fifth day,two times aday),laboratory examination(the day preoperative,the fifth day postoperative).To detect significant differences,we used x~2 test to numberation data,t-test to the normal distribution measurement data and rank sum test to the skewness distribution measurement data.Results:3 cases in the test group felt pain at the fifth day postoperative, and all felt comfortable one month later.There were 3 cases in the control group as well.All the patients could walk upright and the wound healing was good.There was no recurrent hernia during three months after the operation.Mass of the incision was found in four patients(two polyester surgical patch,two polypropylene mesh).It disappeared without any treatment.There was no significant difference between test group and the control group with postoperative pain.The average duration of the pain after the operation of the test group was 1.6±1.1d,and the control group was 2.0±0.8d.P＞0.05.The average duration of the tenderness was 1.9±1.6d,and the control group was 2.4±1.3d.P＞0.05.In the control group,localized swelling was found in three cases of the patients,and it disappeared after alcohol hydropathic compress.There were two cases in the test group as well.No infection,rejection,effusion was found in the test group and control group.Before and after the operation,the laboratory examination had no statistical significance in the test group or the control group.Conclusion:The polyester surgical patch(from Shanghai CHEST Medical Technological Company) was as effective and safe as other patch (polypropylene,B|BRAUN) for inguinal hernia repair.
