Background:Amino acids infusion has been proved to be effective on prevention of peroperative hypothermia. There still remain questions on the adverse reaction and the optimal dose of this intervention. To investigate the effect of different doses of amino acid infusion on body temperature and blood glucose, patients under combined epidural and general anesthesia for abdominal surgery were studied.Method:37 patients scheduled for abdominal surgery were randomly allocated to 4 groups:A(n=9) for control;B(n=10),C(n=10) and D(n=8) for a mixture of 18 amino acids infusion from the beginning of anesthesia to the end of operation,at 1ml/kg/h,2ml/kg/h and 3ml/kg/h respectively(providing heat equivalent to 2kJ/kg/h, 4kJ/kg/h,and 6kJ/kg/h).Body temperature and blood glucose were measured at 6 time points:30 min before anesthesia, just before the beginning of operation,30 min in operation,2 h in operation,30 min after operation and lh after operation.Results:1.Differences in gender, age, height, weight, and surgery and anesthesia duration were not significant among the groups(P>0.05).Body temperature and blood glucose measured 30min before anesthesia did not differ significantly among the groups(P>0.05).2.In group A,body temperature decreased significantly at each time point after anesthesia. The lowest means of temperature were calculated as 35.90℃(P<0.01) and 35.86℃(P<0.01),at 2 h in operation and 30min after operation respectively. While in group B,C and D,with amino acids infusion, body temperature recovered at 1h after operation(P>0.05).In group B and C,means of temperature at every time point were above 36℃.In group D,body temperature decreased to 35.96℃(P<0.01) at 30min in operation, after which temperature recovered, and showed no significant difference with basal level. However, the variance between body temperature at each time point after anesthesia and 30min before anesthesia did not differ significantly among groups(P>0.05).3.In all groups, blood glucose increased significantly after the beginning of surgery (P<0.05).While in group D,increase occurred just after anesthesia and before operation(P<0.01),which was earlier than the other groups. The largest variance between blood glucose at each time points after anesthesia and 30min before anesthesia occurred in group D.Among them, the variance just before the beginning of operation,at 30min in operation and at 2h in operation differed significantly with group A and B(P<0.05).4.The incidence of post-operative shivering in control group is significantly higher than amino acid infusion groups(P<0.05).5.Urinary volume of group B was significantly less than group A(P<0.05),while the differences between other groups were not significant(P>0.05).Conclusion:Intraoperative amino acids infusion can reduce peroperative hypothermia and post-operative shivering. The thermoregulatory effect and the elevation extent of blood glucose during amino acids administration may be related to the dose of amino acids.
