Objective To find out the prevalence of sleep disturbances for children, their influencing factors and differences between two ethics in Xinjiang area. Method The questionnaire about students′social environment and sleep condition was based on students′sleep physiological characteristics and the International Classification of Sleep Disorders. From Febuary to October of 2007, 912 Uygur students randomly selected among the 3 districts (Kuche,Yili,Fukang),at the same time,1019 Hui students randomly selected as control among the city of Changji , Miquan and Dabancheng. Results The mean time of total sleep time and the rate of the nighttime sleep were10.09 hours and 23.56 %, respectively,Uygur students are 9.74 hours and 18.42%,Hui are 10.40 hours and 28.16%. The mean of total sleep time of 6 years old children were remarkably shorter compared with the typical sleep time of Western children of the same age. The prevalence of habitual snoring were 2.54%, have difference between two ethics. The Hui students′prevalence of sleep inquietude, habitual snoring, night talking, nightmares, and sleep terrors were remarkably higher compared with Uygur students. The factors affecting the mean sleep duration were nationality, parent's sleep disorders,the incubation period of sleep, the history of swinging the cradle and co-sleeping etc. Conclusions There is a higher prevalence rate of sleep disorders between two ethics in Xinjiang area. Pediatrician, child health care doctors and parent s should attach importance to children sleep disorders. More research for the prevention and cure of them should be done.
