Objective:The aims of this study were to examine the reliability and the validity of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) according to epidemiological survey methods,and to set up the individual normal occlusion' norms of EPQ in the students of Zhenjiang City.The norms were compared with the students of malocclusion,to explore the students' psychology of malocclusion,and to analysis the influencing factors of psychology,to explore the relationship students' psychology with their age,sex and the severity of malocclusion,in order to provide a scientific basis for clinical treatment.Methods:(1)According to the comprehensive strength of the schools,the students of 38 classes were randomly chose from 9 schools of Zhenjiang City using stratified cluster sampling methods.According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria the students with individual normal occlusion were chose,and by age divided into young(12-15 years old)and adult(16 years or older)students,the students completed EPQ at the same conditions and the same guidance,in accordance with the measurement results,we set up the individual normal occlusion' norms of EPQ in the students of Zhenjiang City.(2)The students with malocclusion were chose from Department of orthodontics,the Affiliated People Hospital of Jiangsu University according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,and the students with malocclusion were divided into young(12-15 years old) and adult(16 years or older) patients.Firstly,the patients were checked up and to take full-mouth impression by researchers.Secondly,before telling the treatment programs,the patients completed independently the EPQ at the same conditions and the same guidance.According to the oral examination,model analysis and EPQ measurement results,we got the mental state of patients with the different ages and different severity of malocclusion.Results:(1)The all sub-scales' test-retest reliabilities of the EPQ were at between 0.75-0.84 in the young and adult students of individual normal occlusion,the cronbach's alpha were at between 0.65-0.79,the correlation between the total scale and the all sub-scales were at between 0.80-0.91, the correlation between the subscales were at between 0.65-0.77.(2)The all sub-scales' test-retest reliabilities of the EPQ were at between 0.70-0.81 in the young and adult patients,the cronbach's alpha were at between 0.67-0.79,the correlation between the total scale and the all sub-scales were at between 0.81-0.90,the correlation between the subscales were at between 0.64-0.79.(3)The scores of young patients in E sub-scale were significantly lower than the young students of individual normal occlusion,the scores in the N sub-scale were significantly higher than the young students of individual normal occlusion;the scores of adult patients in the E sub-scale were significantly lower than the adult students of individual normal occlusion,the scores in the N sub-scale,P sub-scale and L sub-scale were significantly higher than the adult students of individual normal occlusion.(4)The scores of the patients with mild malocclusion and the students of individual normal occlusion were no significant difference,exception of young girls and adult girls,the scores young girls in N sub-scale were significantly higher than the young students of individual normal occlusion,the scores of adult girls in L sub-scale were significantly higher than the adult students of individual normal occlusion.The scores of the students with moderate malocclusion in E sub-scale were significantly lower than the students of individual normal occlusion,the scores in the N sub-scale were significantly higher than the students of individual normal occlusion.The scores of young students with severe malocclusion in E sub-scale were significantly lower than the young students of individual normal occlusion,the scores in the N sub-scale were significantly higher than the young students of individual normal occlusion.The scores of adult students with severe malocclusion in the E sub-scale were significantly lower than the adult students of individual normal occlusion,the scores of adult students with severe malocclusion in the N sub-scale,P sub-scale and L sub-scale were significantly higher than the adult students of individual normal occlusion.Conclusions:(1)Eysenck Personality Questionnaire has higher reliability and validity in the students of individual normal occlusion,to set up the individual normal occlusion' norms of EPQ in the students of Zhenjiang City.(2)Eysenck Personality Questionnaire has higher reliability and validity in the patients of malocclusion.The young patients have higher the introverted personality and unstable personality than the young students of individual normal occlusion,the adult patients have higher the introverted personality,unstable personality,psychoticism and lie.(3)The personalities of the patients with mild malocclusion have no significant differences with the students of individual normal occlusion,the patients with moderate malocclusion and severe malocclusion have higher the introverted personality,unstable personality than the students of individual normal occlusion,especially,the adult patients with severe malocclusion have higher psychoticism and lie than the adult students of individual normal occlusion.
