BackgroundTraumatic brain injury(TBI) is a common illness, which makes great threatening to human life. More and more TBI occurred in our country every year. At emergency department, it is very important to make assessment and treatment in early time of the severity and prognosis of TBI patients. Recently S100B protein is found to be a specificer serum marker for brain injury.ObjectiveTo investigate the clinical significance of serum S100B protein as a special index of TBI in early detecting, and to study the correlation among the level of S100B protein, the severity and the prognosis of the TBI patients.Object and methodTo collect 30 volunteer controls, 30 patient with traumatic brain injury and 30 patient with trauma except traumatic brain injury, according Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS), TBI patients were divided into two groups, the minor group is GCS≥8, the severe group is GCS<8. An ELISA was used to measure the S100B protein in serum from the controls and patients. In the early four days, for TBI patients, the level of serum S100B protein and plasma D-dimmer were regularly measured except the dead. At the 10th day after admission, TBI patients were assessed again according Glasgow Outcome Scale (GOS), and divided into two groups.ResultWithin 6 hours after TBI, the concentration of S100B protein increased higher in patients of TBI than the others (P<0.05). The concentrations of S100B protein increased higher in the severe group(GCS<8) than the minor group (P<0.05). The higher level of serum S100B protein, the more severe of TBI patients, and the higher level of serum S100B protein, the worse prognosis of them. There are correlations between the level of serum S100B protein and GCS,GOS in TBI patient .At the same prognosis group, there is a correlation between the level of serum S100B protein and plasma D- dimmer.(0
