| Objectives 1.To investigate the sedative effect of electroacupuncture stimulation on critically ill patients during mechanical ventilation.2.To evaluate the dependablity between Bispectral index(BIS) and the Ramsay score;and the objectivity of BIS.3.To observe whether acupuncture can decrease the patients cost of treatment in sedation.4. To observe whether sedation can reduce the patients' oxygen consumption.5.To obse rye whether acupuncture can diminish the adverse effects of Propofol on critical patients during mechanical ventilation. Methods 45 patients during mechanical ventilation were included and divided into three groups randomly.Intravenous injection of propofol(Pro I)was given to patients in group A;to patients in group B,Pro I was given also and acupuncture at Shenting(DU24)and Yintang(EX-HN3)with needle retention was applied simultaneously, and to those in group C,the same treatment as that for group B was applied but with electroacupuncture instead of simple acupuncture. The speed of Pro I was controlled through micro—pump to maintain the bispectral index(BIS) between 60 and 80.Then,we observed the dose of propofol used, the Ramsay score, APACHEⅡscore,MODS score,BIS,the results of hepatic function, renal function and blood gas analysis, adverse reaction of Pro I,and blood glucose, and so on.Results The hourly mean dose of propofol used within the first six hours after sedation was(1.46±0.25) mg/kg in group A,and(1.31±0.23) mg/kg in group B,and (0.87±0.17) mg/kg in group C respectively. However, there was not significant difference in BIS,Ramsay score,APACHEⅡscore,MODS score, results of hepatic function, renal function and blood gas analysis, adverse reaction of Pro I,and blood glucose, and so on among the three groups.BIS measurements showed negative correlation with Ramsay scores(r=-0.83).Conclusions 1.Electroacupuncture at Shenting and Yintang has a certain sedative effect on critically ill patients during mechanical ventilation.2.There.is favourable dependablity BIS and the Ramsay score.BIS is a reliable and objective means to evaluate the depth of sedation.3.Electroacupuncture at Shenting and Yintang may reduce the cost of treatment in sedation.4.Sedation can decline patient s' oxygen consumption.5.There have not been sufficient evidences to demonstrate electroacupuncture at Shenting and Yintang can diminish adverse reaction of intravenous injection of propofol on critically ill patients during mechanical ventilation. |
