Objective:To study of the angle and the medullary cavity of the upper femoral by Three-dimensional Computed Tomography,and provide anatomical basis for designing the artificial hip joint in China.Materials and Methods:There were 68 Chinese adults, and their age ranged from 60 to 93 years (on average 65.4 years,and male/female =37/31.Their data were obtained from the TOSHIBA Aquilion/Multi CT machine in the standardized anatomical pose,then measured the diameter of the medullary cavity from left to right and from anterior to posterior at the point 20 mm above the lesser trochanter,at the center of the lesser trochanter,at the point 20 mm below lesser trochanter and at the femoral isthmus,the distance from the lesser trochanter to the femoral isthmus,center-collum-diaphyseal(CCD) angle,femoral head offset,angle of torsion,the angle of the upper femoral medullary cavity in sagittal face.Results:Most of these parameters approximated a Gaussian distribution.The 3D reconstruction view were accurate for measuring the diameter and angle of the upper femoral medullary cavity . In the same plane,the diameter of the upper femoral medullary cavity were statistically correlative. The Offset,CCD and the diameter were significantly different between Chinese and Caucasian. Canal flare index(CFI) and metaphyseal cannal flare index(MCFI) may described the diversity of the upper femoral medullary cavity.There were two curvatures in sagittal plane of the upper femur. There is stable femoral calcar that lied in the medial femoral cortex of upper femur. Conclusion: The shape of the upper femoral medullary cavity is largely variable. It is noticeable that the differences in upper femoral anatomical morphology between Chinese and Caucasian .When selecting artificial hip joint,individual principal shoud be abided by.It is necessary to obtain massive data of upper femoral anatomical morphology in a simple and accurate way in order to provide anatomic basis for designing hip joint prosthesis.
