Objective: To study the value of multislice spiral CT angiography (MSCTA) in the therapeutic evaluation of integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine in pulmonary embolism. Methods: Among 74 inpatients that were clinically suspected of pulmonary embolism and then diagnosed via MSCT and medical examinations, we reviewed and analyzed 45 cases who accepted the treatment of traditional Chinese and western medicine and underwent MSCTA reexamination, studied the sites, direct and indirect signs of pulmonary embolism, and collected the clinical data of those patients. The pre and post treatment data of direct signs was statistically analyzed. Results: There existed 516 branches of pulmonary arteries embolized before treatment in the 45 cases, including 132 branches of central type filling defect, 117 of acute angle mural type filling defect, 85 of blunt angle mural type filling defect, 57 of honeycombed filling defect and 125 of complete occlusion filling defect, and the numbers of corresponding types decreased to 20, 19, 67, 11 and 51 branches respectively after treatment. There had no significant difference among central type, acute angle mural type and honeycombed filling defect, but had significant difference when they are compared with blunt angle type and complete occlusion filling defect respectively. It also showed significant difference between blunt angle type and complete occlusion filling defect. The difference of sites of pulmonary embolism had no statistical significance for curative effect. Conclusion: Multislice spiral CT pulmonary angiography (MSCTPA) is able to display the direct image representations of pulmonary embolism, indicate different formation time of emboli by various performances of direct signs and thus predict the therapeutic efficacy. The central type, acute angle mural type and honeycombed type filling defect highly indicate emboli in acute stage and satisfactory therapeutic effect. Complete occlusion type accompanied with enlargement of pulmonary artery has good efficacy, thus its emboli should be in acute stage. Blunt angle type suggests emboli in chronic stage and poor response to thrombolysis. There had no significant difference for curative effect among the difference of sites of pulmonary embolism.
