Objective: This study examined the relationship of muscle oxygenation determined by using near-infrared spectorscopy with the gas metabolism and investigate the effect of intermittent recovery time in muscle oxygenation in intermittent trainning. Methods: Eight well-trained male middle-long runner do warming-up 5 minutes, then performed 4 time same exercise that running at 85% maximal oxygen uptake for 4 minutes, then rest 2 minutes on a running machina. The second and third week subjects do the same exercise but rest 4 minutes and 8 minutes respectively. Two minutes before exercise untill the end of experiment, near-infrared spectroscopy and heart-lung machine were simultaneously recorded from right quadriceps femoris and face respectively. Results: In intermittent training, muscle oxygenation decrease rapidly at the start of exercise then decrease slightly, the two variation trend significantly different(P<0.05)in every exercise, muscle oxygenation increase quickly in every rest time. The rate of increase in muscle oxygenation levels at different intermittent recovery time and the rate of variation in muscle oxygenation after different intermittent recovery time were significantly different(P<.000). Respiratory quotient also decrease rapidly when muscle oxygenation decrease rapidly, then increase untill next exercise. The analyses showed that the variation trend of muscle oxygenation was positively correlated with the variation trend of repiratory quotient(r=0.724 P<0.05).Conclusion: In intermittent trainning, the rate of variation in muscle oxygenation during exercise was significant different that refect the energy metabolism of subjects. The rate of increase in muscle oxygenation levels at different intermittent recovery time and the rate of variation in muscle oxygenation after different intermittent recovery time were significantly different. The positively correlation between the the variation trend of muscle oxygenation and the variation trend of repiratory quotient suggested that the variation of muscle oxygenation reflects the variation of gas metabolism in intermittent trainning.
