This paper examines the developing process of traditional Chinese medicine in the recent one hundred years. The author tentatively argues that four fundamental patterns are followed in the course of its development. Traditional Chinese culture is the inside information. Traditional Chinese medicine is a combination bearing the characteristics of both humanistic science and physical science. The clinical practice is its headspring. With great efforts made by numerous medical doctors and physicians, the traditional Chinese medicine has played its full role in the medical practice. The compatibility of the classics with the modern science is its approach to develop. The therapeutic effectiveness of traditional Chinese medicine has been raised dramatically since western medicine was called in and more advanced diagnostic and treating measures were introduced into. Emphasizing reconciliation and unity is the mode of its development. As a member of the nature, human being not only needs to keep his body inside in balance, but also has to live harmoniously with the nature. Thus it is suggested that a way to develop traditional Chinese medicine in this century be the following: reinforcing the education of the qualified personnel in traditional Chinese medicine; changing the conceptions of school education; developing traditional Chinese medicine on the basis of traditional Chinese itself; combining western medicine with traditional Chinese medicine in a harmonious way, etc.
