OBJECTIVETo compare the bacteriostatic and bactericidal action of xipayi mouth rinse, calcium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite on Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro, and to provide the envidence for the clinlical use of the xipayi mouth rinse.METHODS1. Sensitive tests were carried out by the qiquid dilution method. Within 37℃anaerobic environment for growth, the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration(MBC) after 48 hours were determined on xipayi mouth rinse, calcium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite on Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro.2. It was determined that the minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) of xipayi mouth rinse, calcium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite on Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro using MTT assay respectively.3. It was determined to the diameter of bacteriostatic zones of xipayi mouth rinse, calcium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite in different concentration on Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro using liquid diffusion technique.RESULT1. The results of MIC and MBC by the liquid dilution method: xipayi mouth rinse, calcium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite in certain concentration had the bacteriostatic action in a certain extent on Porphyromonas gingivalis. Xipayi mouth rinse had the bacteriostatic action on Porphyromonas gingivalis when its concentration was more than 5mg/ml. Sodium hypochlorite had the bacteriostatic action on Porphyromonas gingivalis when its concentration was more than 5mg/ml. Calcium hydroxide when its concentration was more than 3.0mg/ml (pH>9.5 ) had the bacteriostatic action on Porphyromonas gingivalis. 2. The MIC result determined by MTT assay was the same to the result by conventional direct observing assay.3. The bacteriostatic action of 5mg/ml xipayi mouth rinse and 3.0mg/mI calcium hydroxide on Porphyromonas gingivalis showed no significant statistical differece (P>0.05) . The bacteriostatic action of 10mg/ml xipayi mouth rinse and 3.5mg/ml calcium hydroxide on Porphyromonas gingivalis showed no significant statistical differece ( P > 0.05) .4. The bacteriostatic action of 0.5 % sodium hypochlorite on Porphyromonas was more effective than that of 5mg/ml and 10mg/ml xipayi mouth rinse (P<0.05). The bacteriostatic action of 20mg/ml xipayi mouth rinse and 0.5% sodium hypochlorite on Porphyromonas gingivalis had no statistical difference (P>0.05).CONCLUSIONS1. The xipayi mouth rinse had the bacteriostatic (5mg/ml) and bactericidal action (10mg/ml) on Porphyromonas gingivalis in vitro by sensitive tests.2. The bacteriostatic action on Porphyromonas gingivalis of xipayi mouth rinse in certain concentration had the same effect with that of calcium hydroxide and sodium hypochlorite.
