A Study On Parenting Difficulties And Needs Of Family With Autistic Children In Liaoning Province

Autism is a pervasive developmental disorder, because of its early age of onset, special symptoms, and poor prognosis, many people with autism have little chance of recovery to the independent living, and they need care from other people all the life. So, comparing with other exceptional children, the children with autism bring heavier burden to country, society, and family, they and their family needs more attention and help. But at present, people do not have enough attention and understanding to children with autism and their family in our country.To systematically understanding the parenting difficulties and needs of children with autism in Liaoning province, this study investigated the parents of children with autism in Dalian and Shenyang by using self-made questionnaire. On this basis, we discussed how the educational level of parents, monthly family income, children's symptomatic degree, and the age of children impact on the parenting difficulties and needs of children with autism, and accordingly put forward some suggestions to solve problems and meet their needs.Through investigation and analysis, the conclusions are as follows: 1. Based on the results of validity analysis, the family-parenting difficulties of children with autism consist of four dimensions: economic burden, parents pressure, anxieties about children's growth and the future, and educational rehabilitation. 2. Parents'needs include four dimensions: knowledge and information, support, children's growth and placement in the future, and educational rehabilitation. 3. The degree of family-parenting difficulties of children with autism reach the middling level, but the degree in needs is at a level above middling. 4. The parenting difficulties present a downtrend with the advancing of fathers'educational level, and the difficulties in economic burden and educational rehabilitation also present a downtrend along with the higher educational level of mothers'. 5. As the growth of children's age, parents have more and more demands in aspects of children's appropriate placement in the future. 6. The parenting difficulties of mild children are lowest, and then the difficulties present a gradual uptrend with the exacerbation of children's symptomatic degree. 7. To the families whose monthly income are more than 5 000 yuan, the family-parenting difficulties and demands are all lower than the families whose monthly income are less than 5 000 yuan.
