Objective:The aim of this research is to find out whether patients operated on for the lumbar intervertebral disc herniation have an increased incidence of diabetes mellitus or not.Methods:This research is a prospective study.100 patients operated on in our department in SRRS Hospital for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation were compared with 100 patients of the same age who were admitted for other disease from 2008 to 2009. We examined history for diabetes mellitus,blood glucose,and glycated hemoglobin of patients. We used X2 test for statistical analysis.Results:There is a statistically significant increased incidence of diabetes mellitus in patiens operated on for the lumbar intervertebral disc herniation compared with similar patients operated on for other diseaseConclusion:Diabetes mellitus may be a predisposing factor for lumbar disk degeneration in patients operated on.
