ObjectiveThe present study aimed to investigate the incidence rate of hypertension, and the determinants for hypertension in Mongolian populations in rural areas of China.MethodsIn the prospective study,4,549 Mongolian populations without hypertension at baseline aged,35 years were followed for a median of 28 months. Incident hypertension was examined from January to June 2008.ResultsDuring follow-up,34.5% Mongolian developed clinical hypertension, and the control rates of hypertension in Mongolian were very low (1.34%). The annual incidence rates of hypertension were 14.16 per 100 person-years (95% CI,13.52 to 14.82). Female, baseline age, prehypertension, overweight and obesity, and family history of hypertension were associated with developing hypertension in Mongolian, also alcohol drinking was associated with developing hypertension among Mongolian (HR:1.128; 95% CI:1.045 to 1.219). Mongolian with family history of hypertension had a great risk of developing hypertension (60% increased).ConclusionsHigh incidence rate of hypertension were found in Mongolian. Urgent improvements such as stringent monitoring of hypertension should be enhanced for future hypertension prevention and control.
